Plant of the Mallow family. Hibiscuses range
from large herbaceous plants to trees.
Popular as ornamental plants because of their
brilliantly coloured red through to white
bell-shaped flowers, they include Hibiscus
syriacus and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. Some
tropical species are also useful: Hibiscus
esculentus, of which the edible fruit is okra
or lady's fingers; Hibiscus tiliaceus, which
supplies timber and fibrous bark to South Sea
islanders; and Hibiscus sabdariffa,
cultivated in the W Indies and elsewhere for
its fruit.
